In this passage, Gideon destroys the Ashera pole and the altar to baal. He does this in response to God and others want Gideon to be punished for it.
I love the response that is given by Gideon's father in chapter 6 verse 31, "If [baal] is a god, let him contend for himself..."
i think it is so cool how gideon's father sticks up for him and challenges their god.
I need to keep in mind that God can contend for Himself! He is a real god! this is easy to loose sight of.
