After reading the Lord's prayer in Luke 11, verses 2 through 4, I have more of an appreciation for what Jesus is saying.
Earlier, Jesus had charged His disciples to go and spread the gospel. However, they were not to take any supplies; no food, no extra clothing, nothing.
So when the disciples ask Jesus how they should pray, when the Lord says in Luke 11 verse 3, "Give us each day our daily bread." Jesus is literally saying, pray to the Lord and trust Him to provide your daily needs. I am sure that meant a whole lot more to them than it would for us.
However, Jesus emphasized praying this prayer to have their daily bread, rather than just expecting it. Ask and it shall be given to you. We have to pray and we have to ask.
I believe Jesus is saying to pray often and ask Him to meet our needs. We then must trust Him to do so. This is how we should pray.
